Move to a new phone without starting over

Smart Switch is an Android app from Fuzon Apps for moving your data when you change phones. You can clone your old phone to your new one, or transfer just the files you choose. On Google Play it's listed as Transfer My Data – Phone Clone.

A new phone should feel like an upgrade, not a reset. Smart Switch is for the moment you're holding two phones, the old one with years of photos and files on it and the new one still fresh out of the box, and you want the new one to feel like yours straight away.

The app is free to download from Google Play, with optional in-app purchases. Below you'll find the moments it helps with, the two ways to transfer, how to get started, and a checklist to get both phones ready.

Made for moments like these

  • You've just bought a new phone

Move your data across from the phone you're replacing, so the new one is ready to use with your things already on it.

  • Your old phone is moving on

Copy what you need before the old phone goes to a family member, a trade-in or a buyer.

  • You only need some of it

Transfer just the files you pick, like this year's photos or a set of documents, instead of everything.

  • You're helping someone else switch

Setting up a new phone for a parent or a child? Move their data across so their new phone feels familiar from day one.

What it does

  • Clone your old phone to your new one

Clone Phone is the option to choose when you're replacing a phone. It copies your data from the old phone to the new one, so the new phone can pick up where the old one left off instead of starting from scratch.

  • Transfer just the files you pick

Transfer File lets you choose what to send, so you can move a set of photos or documents without copying everything else.

  • Old Android to new Android

Made for moving from one Android phone to another, so you can switch handsets and keep the data that matters to you.

  • Free to download

Get the app from Google Play at no cost. Optional in-app purchases are available through Google Play.

How to get started

  1. Install it on both phones

Get the app from Google Play on your old phone and your new one. Search for Transfer My Data – Phone Clone.

  2. Choose how to transfer

Pick Clone Phone to move your data across, or Transfer File to choose just the files you want.

  3. Connect the two phones

Follow the steps on screen to connect your old phone and your new one.

  4. Keep them together until it's done

Leave both phones close to each other, charged and switched on until the transfer finishes, then check your things arrived.

Clone Phone or Transfer File?

Smart Switch gives you two ways to move your data. Here's how to choose.

Not sure? If you're replacing your phone, start with Clone Phone. If you just need to pass a few things across, use Transfer File.

Before you start

Five minutes of preparation makes the move smoother.

  • Back up anything you can't replace, so it isn't only on one phone
  • Charge both phones, or keep them plugged in during the transfer
  • Check the new phone has enough free space for what you're moving
  • Update both phones to the latest software they offer
  • Have the passwords for your accounts handy for signing in on the new phone

Getting both phones ready, and what to do after

Back up first

Before any transfer, make sure the things you can’t replace are kept somewhere else too: photos and videos, important documents, and anything you’d be upset to lose. A transfer moves data between two phones, and it’s always wise to have a second copy. Our Cloud Storage app is one way to keep a copy in the cloud.

Charge both phones

Moving a lot of data takes time, especially years of photos and videos. Start with both phones well charged, or plug them in while they work, so neither runs flat halfway through.

Make room on the new phone

Check the new phone has enough free space for everything you’re moving. If space is tight, use Transfer File to move the most important things first, and leave old downloads and files you no longer need behind.

Keep the phones together and leave them alone

Keep both phones close to each other until the transfer is done. Don’t lock, restart or switch either phone off part way through, and avoid using them for other things while they work. Interrupting a transfer can leave it incomplete.

Don’t rush a big transfer

If you have years of photos and videos, start the transfer when you won’t need either phone for a while, such as in the evening. Rushing to finish before you head out is how transfers get interrupted.

Sign back into your apps

Some apps ask you to sign in again on a new phone, even after your data has moved across. Have your passwords ready, or a password manager, before you start. Banking and other security-sensitive apps often need to be set up fresh on each new phone.

Know what can need extra steps

Some things live inside individual apps or accounts rather than on the phone itself, so they can need extra steps on a new phone. Chat apps often have their own backup and restore, and authenticator apps usually need to be set up again. Check how your most important apps move to a new phone before you reset the old one.

Check everything arrived

Before you do anything to the old phone, open the new one and look through your photos, files and apps. Make sure the things you care about are there. It’s much easier to fix a missing item while you still have the old phone in hand.

Live with the new phone for a day

Once the transfer is done, use the new phone for a day before you hand the old one on. Make a call, send a message, open your banking app and take a photo. Everyday use is the best way to spot anything you’ve missed.

Before your old phone moves on

Once you’re happy with the new phone, sign out of your accounts on the old one, then reset it to factory settings before you sell it, trade it in or hand it down. Take out the SIM card and any memory card, and the old phone is ready for its next owner.

Recycle the old phone if it’s not going to a new owner

If your old phone isn’t being sold or handed down, don’t put it in the bin. Phones contain materials that can be recovered, and in Australia the MobileMuster program offers free mobile phone recycling, with drop-off points at many retailers and councils. Reset the phone first, then drop it off.
